Quick Service Restaurants Move As Fast As the Internet
MUY Brands relies on Interface and Cisco for quicker service, lower costs and improved security

View the Cisco MUY Success Story

Long before founding MUY Brands, a large group of Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC and Long John Silver’s restaurants, Jim Bodenstedt knew two things: money should be carefully managed and he was destined later in life to run a restaurant. Bodenstedt got serious about money management around age 15 when his grandparents left him a couple thousand dollars which he invested in the stock market and parlayed for profit between high school classes. A few years later, just shy of 18, he knew enough about money to manage a McDonald’s restaurant. Today, Bodenstedt runs a restaurant empire totaling 226 locations, one of the largest Yum! Brands franchise groups.

As the second youngest graduate of McDonald’s Hamburger University management program, at the age of 19 Jim Bodenstedt became an early adopter of the franchise model – which standardizes operations and enforces consistency. Today, he achieves those goals with a standard wide area network design from Interface (ISS) which connects the ISS Data Center to a Cisco Integrated Service Router in every store.

Challenge

“Duplication is very important in our business,“ says Bodenstedt. “It’s consistency of platforms across all restaurants, across all groups, allowing our managers to have consistency in how we run our business.”

Solution

Behind the scenes, the Interface Secure Managed Cloud provides a wide-area network that unifies IP address schemes across store groups, and supports PCI compliance at each store with a common VLAN scheme to protect data integrity. Store managers don’t bother knowing those details, but they do enjoy cloud powered improvements in store systems, like the ability to create weekly profit and loss statements that automatically roll up to district managers.

Results

“We take that P&L at the end of the period from the store and match it against the P&L from accounting. Then we discuss why we have any variances in what was reported and what our internal accounting thinks is there,” says Bodenstedt. “So we get to be better managers about knowing what our business is.”

Executive Summary

Muy Brands, LLC

  • Industry: Quick Service Restaurant Franchisee
  • Locations: 226
  • Headquarters: San Antonio, TX
  • Number of Employees: 8,000+
  • One of the top 5 Yum! Brands, Inc.'s Franchisees

Challenge

To consolidate broadband vendors and costs, to standardize network design and hardware

Solution

Cisco based Cloud Services connecting Cisco Integrated Service Routers supporting VPN, voice-over-IP and IP based Alarm Monitoring

Results

  • Improved operations
  • Increased customer, employee and data security
  • Significant reductions in operating expenses

Bodenstedt is an advisory board member on Yum! Brand’s Franchise Technology Committee. When he challenged Interface to provide more benefit from its Cisco powered Secure Managed Cloud he was soon delighted to save nearly 35-thousand dollars per month in phone lines and service charges with Interface Digital Voice. Before the transition to voice-over-IP, Bodenstedt says fear of toll charges made managers hesitate before using the phone for conference calls and other business — but no longer.

“And now it (Interface Digital Voice) flattens that cost down for our managers and it’s nothing to just pick up the phone and dial an extension and you’re talking to whoever is on the other end with no toll charge, and that’s very exciting for us.”

MUY’s network of stores is constantly growing. But CIO Dan Karam says the network based cost savings he achieves after taking over those stores never fails to amaze him.

“We put Interface Digital Voice in some newly acquired Pizza Hut stores each with 7-8 phone lines,” says Karem. "It allowed us to cancel a total of 71 phone lines in 13 stores saving about $4,000 a month... Now that’s real money!”

Conference calls are essential to MUY’s Pizza Hut restaurants. Each Saturday store managers gather on a conference bridge to perform what Bodenstedt calls ‘Stand and Deliver’, a competitive analysis of who performed and who didn’t on Friday night, the busiest night of the week. Competition on the calls helps reduce Friday’s speed of pizza deliveries, which Bodenstedt says improves service overall the rest of the week. He says an improved phone system plays a role supporting his operational vision.

“It’s not the broadband or router that makes the magic happen. It’s using the technology, using the broadband that makes the magic happen. The benefit doesn’t appear automatically. It takes work to do it, but there’s a lot of things we can leverage when we have the technology.”

The Interface Secure Managed Cloud also supports a vital mission at MUY to take paper out of day-to-day operations. “Paperless is a game changer for us,” Karem says. ‘’For example, when we hire a new employee, there’s a 40-plus page new hire packet that has to be sent to the office, not to mention the cost of ink and toner if it’s faxed… just a lot of paper moving around. Now we use a multifunction device to scan, fax or print, then securely email the necessary pages back to the office.”

Another paperless initiative at MUY is direct deposit for paychecks. Instead of opening an envelope to see the amount of their paychecks - employees use the store computer to view their pay stub online and email to others - spouses, or ex spouses for child support or alimony. Karem says by having Secure Managed Broadband in the store, he knows that activity will be partitioned by VLANs from business data.

“Employees can use the PC for approved tasks and training, and all the while we don’t have to worry about security issues. For Interface to bring that service to the store is a huge, huge, huge deal!”

The Interface Secure Managed Cloud also makes important improvements to customer experience like faster service delivery. Before broadband adoption in the stores, KFC measured lengthy wait times, as much as 30 seconds, to process credit card transactions. That same credit card swipe takes close to three seconds via the Interface Secure Managed Cloud. Faster moving lines and better customer service are important to Bodenstedt. But equally important, he says, is data security.

“And the key is that we operate on a private network cloud with all the PCI requirements. It was important to me that it be private and managed. I was pleased to see that Interface was able serve all the areas and locations where I have restaurants and provide the service.”

The Interface Secure Managed Cloud also improves the in-store protection of customers and employees with an IP based security alarm panel. Cloud based responses to alarm events can be as much as two minutes faster than response to a telephone based alarm system.

Interface will soon return to each MUY store to perform a router refresh with the Cisco 891 ISR. G2 Router features like Wide Area Applications Services (WAAS) will speed up newer store applications like Hiring Zone and Learning Zone, media rich ways to accept employment applications and train employees. Says Karem – “None of that stuff is possible without the Cisco router and secure managed broadband.”

Nobody imagined web connected restaurants when Bodenstedt graduated from Hamburger University. But as successful as he’s been, Bodenstedt is confident that technology and partners like Cisco and Interface will lead to something even better.

“We might celebrate success with where we are and how we got here. But I’m certain that not any of our leaders or anyone associated with Yum! is satisfied. They may be happy with the progress they’ve made. But everyone wants to do better. We need to try harder every day and be the best.”

Dollar General Corporation Adopts Interface Systems Managed Cloud Services to
Replace Traditional Service Providers

More than ever, retailers are using the Internet, and trusting the Internet, for business communications and to provide better customer service. As stores depend more on cloud-based services, they also face serious challenges for network availability and data security.

Cisco G2 Series integrated service routers meet these high standards and, as the leader in IP Security Services, Interface is the ideal partner to deliver a reliable and secure network.

Interface Systems (ISS) offers a business model and an array of managed services that make the value of Cisco routers, switches and wireless products affordable for retail, commercial and small business customers.

Executive Summary

Dollar General Corporation

  • Industry: Small-Box Discount Retailer
  • Locations: Approximately 9,500
  • Headquarters: Goodlettsville, TN
  • Number of Employees:: 85,900

Challenge

Standardize in-store services and operations

Solution

Dollar General uses Interface Managed Cloud Services for its entire retail store network, which includes:

  • Wide-area Network Management
  • PCI Compliance
  • IP Alarm System Monitoring
  • IP Video Surveillance
  • and Interface Digital Voice

Results

  • Improved operations
  • Increased customer, employee and data security
  • Significant reductions in operating expenses

Challenge

Dollar General Corporation, the largest discount retailer in the United States by number of stores, previously had hundreds of service providers delivering disparate network services. With Dollar General’s rapid growth, Interface filled a need to standardize in-store services with a uniform network design.

In particular, Dollar General needs higher bandwidth and a new router in each store for wireless inventory tracking and point of sales reporting. The retailer also needs to support stricter data security standards for credit cards.

Solution

After conducting extensive testing and an ROI analysis, Dollar General selected Interface Systems. The project converts security and communications systems from analog to digital – eliminating the expense of more than five thousand phone lines.

The ISS data and communications suite for Dollar General is based on the Cisco G2 Series 891 router. Services include Wide-area Network Management, PCI Compliance via Cisco IPS/IDS and Rogue Wireless Management, IP Alarm System Monitoring, Managed IP Video Surveillance, and Interface Digital Voice. This first-to-market suite of cloud based applications and management is delivered via Interface Secure Managed Broadband, a wide-area network design featuring advanced security services on the G2 891 Router and redundant network connections for failover and business continuity.

Interface makes it easy for Dollar General to attain the value of the Cisco 891 router by providing it as the foundation of its Secure Managed Cloud based service instead of a capital expense. In addition to providing broadband service and managing the router, Interface also provides Dollar General with network based store services like Cisco IPS/IDS and Cisco WAP management to support PCI Compliance. Interface leverages the network further with IP monitoring of physical security systems and by cutting expenses with voice over IP.

Results

Dollar General uses Interface Managed Cloud Services for its entire retail store network, which includes approximately 9,500 locations. In addition, Dollar General opens about 50 new stores each month making this project one of the largest retail deployments of Cisco G2 891 series routers.

"Dollar General is one the first major retailers to embrace bundling these critical in-store services. This landmark decision signals a fundamental shift in how retailers are thinking about the value of their existing service provider relationships and the business opportunities provided with insight on demand. We are honored to be a part of Dollar General’s business strategy.” "

- Robert Aranda, Interface IP Division President

“This project began as an RFP for a land based store network to replace slower performing satellite dishes,” said Jeff Frye, VP Sales and Marketing for Interface. “Interface emerged over other providers by adding value to the network. We converted an array of common store applications like alarm panels, DVRs and telephones to operate on the Cisco router which speeds up store operations and lowers communications costs.“

“What Interface delivers for any single location or a large organization like Dollar General is the economy of vendor consolidation. Interface offers a ‘single throat to choke’ for billing and support,” said Michael Shaw, CEO of Interface, “which combined with system standardization are huge improvements in efficiency.”

“Our best-in-class, Managed Cloud Bundle provides Dollar General with a cost-saving and scalable technology template that is second to none,” said Robert Aranda, IP Division President of Interface. “Dollar General is one the first major retailers to embrace bundling these critical in-store services. This landmark decision signals a fundamental shift in how retailers are thinking about the value of their existing service provider relationships and the business opportunities provided with insight on demand. We are honored to be a part of Dollar General’s business strategy.”

Orlando based IDeACOM Solutions Group has a tradition as a provider of business communications systems, starting decades ago with the first hospital intercom systems and improving with the latest Internet based voice services. Solution

After conducting extensive research and ROI analysis, IDeACOM Solutions Group became a Managed Service Channel Sales Partner of Internet based business services from Interface Security Systems (ISS). The ISS data and communications suite includes Wide-area Network Provisioning and Management, support for PCI Compliance, Network Vulnerability Scanning and IP Alarm System Monitoring. This first-to-market suite of cloud based applications and management is delivered via Interface Secure Managed Broadband, a wide-area network design featuring the advanced security services of the Cisco 881 Generation 2 Router and a redundant 3G WAN connection for failover and business continuity.

Results

IDeACOM Solutions Group’s longtime customer, DiPasqua Enterprises, was a perfect fit for the suite of products provided by ISS. The DiPasqua Enterprise corporate office had been using IDeACOM Solutions Groups SIP trunking product to replace their costly local lines and were looking for ways to realize similar cost savings in their 99 Subway Sandwich locations in Central Florida. By eliminating a significant number of analog lines, standardizing broadband and security services, delivering PCI compliance and standardization on the hardware deployment and security policies at each store to support these activities IDeACOM Solutions Group was able to bring significant cost savings to DiPasqua Enterprises. The Interface Secure Managed Cloud Services® was a perfect fit. Giannone chose ISS to provide each store’s broadband connection because ISS uses a standard Cisco 881 ISR with 3G backup to provide always-on connectivity for credit card transactions. In addition, ISS uses its managed broadband connection to improve burglar and panic alarm service with free installation of a new IP based alarm panel with GSM backup to guard against line cuts.

“Interface Secure Managed Cloud Services® improve store operations for DiPasqua,” says Giannone, “and increase the security of customers, employees and data. It was a simple set of benefits to share with my customer for quick acceptance. Best of all, the conversation enabled me to provide multiple services in one package, while giving my customer the benefit of consolidated billing.”

“My partnership with Interface gives me added resources to build and maintain customer loyalty.”

- Bob Giannone, IDeACOM Solutions Group

Going forward, Giannone remains in front of DiPasqua as the first line responder for service and support, creating ongoing value. “My customer relies on me more than ever,” he says. “And my partnership with Interface gives me added resources to build and maintain customer loyalty.”
